Some of our favorite non-gringo spots to eat

Here are a few of the places we like to eat at in Zihua. These are not located in Centro or on the beach, but are generally less than a 20 minute walk, a 10 peso combi bus ride, or a 40 peso taxi away. In addition, they are are all amazing spots to see outside the “tourist zone” and super inexpensive!

For breakfast, we have two breakfast tortas stands that we love to visit. Only 15 pesos ($0.80USD) for a delicious rajas or chorizo con huevo torta. One stand is located at Plaza Kioto and the other is located on the sidewalk next to MEGA Soriana.

For lunch, there is an awesome torta stand near the Mercado outside of Centro called Tortas Gigantes. A giant torta sandwich that takes two hands to hold and a chocolate eskimo shake shouldn’t set you back more than 60 pesos ($3.25USD). We can easily share this meal. The restaurant has a very nice outdoor seating area, too. Just down the road from Tortas Gigantes is possibly the best taco stand in Zihua. It’s open 24 hours, but it’s the perfect lunch spot after a morning of shopping or hanging at the pool. It’s called Taqueria La Flechita Roja and they are open 24 hours a day. We share a soda and 6 tacos of barbacoa de res or pastor for 52 pesos ($2.75USD).

  • Taqueria La Flechita Roja – Always busy!

For an afternoon cool down, find Toño’s. It’s located between Plaza Kioto and MEGA Soriana. 40 pesos ($2.25USD) will get you a large smoothie. You can choose strawberry, banana, or strawberry-banana. They also have flavored cold drinks and popsicles.

For dinner, one of our favorite spots to eat before hitting the Cinemex movie theater is El Leñador. It’s a hip restaurant that opened at the beginning of 2019. They have a wood-burning stove for pizzas We like the food, but go there more for the atmosphere. Dinner will run about 150 pesos per person. La Papa Loca is a little more well-known with the gringos, but is a great spot that is still mostly frequented by locals. Giant potatoes stuffed with a variety of cheeses, meats, vegetables and more can be purchased for under 100 pesos. Chips and salsa are free! A fun place to visit that is always packed in the evenings.
