- Zihuatanejo is the 160th most populous city in Mexico. The municipality has a population of about 120,000. This would put Zihua just inside the top 250 most populous cities in the States, and within the top 25 in Canada.
- Zihuatanejo is named in honor of José Azueta. Azueta was born May 2, 1895 in Acapulco. He died during the US second invasion of México that began on April 21, 1914 the first day of the invasion. He manned a machine gun outside a building at the Port of Veracruz to defend against troops sent by Woodrow Wilson. On April 24 he was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain, then awarded the 3rd class Military merit medal on May 1. He died on Mexican Mother’s Day, May 10.
