Playa Blanca is just an extension of Playa Larga, but easier to get to by bus. Recently our friends rented a 2 bedroom party house on Playa Blanca and we went out for a visit. By bus you can take the Aeropuerto combi van to the airport, and then the Barra combi passes through Playa Larga on it’s way to Barra de Potosi.
There is one main well-paved road that runs parallel to Playa Blanca. It’s lined with bungalows, some very nice houses, and a few giant condominium complexes. As far as restaurants go, it’s mostly beach bars. The beach is very similar to Playa Larga, long and wide with a huge break in the waves. Playa Blanca is 20 to 25 minutes from Zihuatanejo. We stopped by a beach bar before leaving town and paid 25 pesos for beers and 50 pesos for papas fritas.
In late February Barra de Potosi has a Spring Fair. It’s a one day event from 9am to 3pm, and it’s very popular. You can get there by taking the same route as going to Playa Blanca, or by taking the Petatlan bus from Centro, getting off at Los Achotes, and then taking a second bus the final 10 minutes. It’s less than 30 minutes from Zihua. The Spring Fair is lined with arts, crafts, and street vendors selling drinks and homemade food. Playa Larga itself is a sleepy fishing village of less than 500 people. The beach has a connected lagoon and is a popular place for birdwatching. You can rent a kayak or hire a guide right off the beach. There are also plenty of beach bars packed into this small village. Beers generally cost 20 pesos and papas fritas and chips with guacamole can be purchased for about 70 pesos each. If you are in Zihua when the Barra de Potosi Spring Fair is happening, then this is a great day trip.
